Former head of state, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd) has described poverty as the biggest enemy of democracy.

Represented by the National President of Middle Belt Forum, Professor Gerry Gana,at the 2017 summit dinner organized by House of Justice in Kaduna yesterday, he said Nigeria has no business with poverty, as the country is endowed with tremendous resources by God.

Gowon said: “We must reject poverty, as millions of Nigerians remain poor. It is important to draw our attention to the biggest enemy of the state, which is poverty. If we want a reliable and durable democracy, we must pay attention to generating jobs , so that poverty can be eradicated from our society.

“Nigeria has no business with poverty, because God has endowed this country with tremendous resources, and what is required is to transcend the resources in order to improve on the life of our people.”
