The alleged killers of the DPO of Rumuorlumeni, SP Kingsley Chukwuegu have been arrested by the Rivers State Police Command.
State Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Zaki said the gang was smashed by the IGP Monitoring Unit, led by ACP Bennett Igwe after weeks of thorough investigation.
Zaki said the gang that allegedly murdered the DPO was led by Uche Ogbonna and second in command, Chidiebere Oberenwa who was arrested in Lagos.
He further disclosed that the gang members who are responsible for incidents of armed robbery and kidnapping recorded along the Enugu-Aba-Port Harcourt Express Way, had confessed to the crime.
According to him, “Men of the IGP Monitoring Unit led by the Commander, ACP Bennett Igwe in a sting operation arrested the killers of Late SP Kingsley Chukwuegu who was killed on the 9th April, 2018 at Owazza on his way back from his village to Port Harcourt.
“The dare devil armed robbers who are said to have carried out the operation were in Uniforms pretending to be on a stop and search duty. They are responsible for the robbery and kidnapping operations along the Enugu-Aba-Port Harcourt Express way.
“The suspected armed robbers are: Uche Ogbonna aka General, Chidiebere Oberenwa, Bethel Ihejirika, Solomon Ogbonna, Ikenna Onwuchekwa, Nnamdi Ikpe and Victor Ngozi Marcus.”
Veloxnews reports that the prime suspect, Uche Ogbonna when questioned by newsmen said the killing of the DPO was an error.
“We pretended as if we were security operatives and stopped his car. He came down and was trying to talk to us, so we started shooting up. We didn’t know that the bullet will touch him. We did not even know that he was a police officer,” he said.
