American Rapper, DMX (real name Earl Simmons) was sentenced to one-year imprisonment for tax evasion fraud amounting to $1.7 million (N612 million). His sentencing, however, was not without drama.
His lawyer hoped that the 47-year-old will have his sentence reduced after playing one of his hit track Slippin which was released in 1998. The song is an illustration of his struggles and his situation. Fans in the court seemed to enjoy it as they nodded to the song while it played.
Some of the lyrics include: “To live is to suffer, but to survive, well, that’s to find meaning in the suffering”.
His lawyer also pleaded that he needs to be with his 18-month-old son who needs to undergo two medical operations. The song seemed to have some success as the judge of the Manhattan Federal Court, Jed Rakoff, reduced to one year what would have been a maximum jail sentence.
